According to the Director General of Nightdive Studios, the System Shock remake had “problem development”

Nightdive Studios General Director Stephen Kick recently spoke in an interview with Gamesindustry, telling the hopes related to the new System Shock remake, and about the problems that he encountered during the development period. As expected originally by the number of delays, the new remake led to numerous problems in the development that the studio has encountered for several years. Nevertheless, the preliminary reception turned out to be fruitful for this game, which forced the general director to lay great hopes on it.

The development of the System Shock remake was not easy, but the preliminary reception was positive. Even if the team decides to focus on remasters after System Shock, this does not mean that the company reduces its ambitions.

Moreover, in the interview, the recent merger of Atari and what this means for the System Shock series and the entire studio as a whole is considered in detail. The main problem that the remake was faced with was financing and the project scale for developers from Nightdive, which delivered a lot of trouble for the team for many years. Despite all the previous problems that the game faced, the future of the System Shock franchise seems lighter.

Say hypothetically, we would have to make another game. This would probably take a quarter of time from what we spent on System Shock. And I hope a quarter of the budget.

The interview also talks about the process of teaching teams; Thanks to the experience gained, future projects with a similar budget and scale will be developed much faster. Nightdive Studios General Director Stephen Kick claims that the acquisition will not affect current projects, since Atari will allow them to finalize the formula of old -school fps in the future.

The acquisition of Atari has nothing to do with our general course. Most of all this will depend on the success of System Shock. Depending on how successful it will be, we will decide whether it is worth doing another remake of this scale.

It is safe to say that the general director does not call any negative consequences from the transaction with Atari. It also means that the release of the System Shock remake will go according to plan, and nothing will change the road map of the project. As Kick has already said, the success of the game will become a turning point for an alluring studio.

The wording in the interview also emphasizes that remakes of the same scale as System Shock may appear if sales meet the expectations of the studio. Recent hints say that Nightdive is making every effort to release five games this year. In addition, an official announcement of many of its new games is planned, which further confirms the prospect.

In fact, we have several announcements. I would like to share them with you, but this will leave this question in the past. We are working on a bunch of really little-known FPS-games of the 1990s that will surprise many people. In particular, one of them will make people think: "What the hell is it, such?".

System Shock remake has been in development for a long time. However, the expectation ended, and the game will be released in three weeks. It will be released on May 30, 2023 for Windows, Linux, MacOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and Series S.
